[1938] It is located at 21 Essex Street. The oldest gay bar in continuous operation in Boston, it is known for a sign over the bar that reads, “Banks Don’t Serve Liquor. We Don’t Lend Out Money.” A fight in the bar that spills out into the street prompts one of the first uses of the term “combat zone” in 1951.*
